Floyd Mayweather, Jr. spoke with CBS Sports regarding his upcoming bout with Marquez and his feelings about MMA. "It takes true skills to be in the sport of boxing, and mixed martial arts is for beer-drinkers. Boxing is for everybody. I mean, you can't take my shoes off and take my shirt off and just throw me in a cage," said Mayweather, Jr.
The undefeated boxer continues, "...And this is not a racial statement but there's no white fighters in boxing that's dominating, so they had to go to something else and start something new."

I agree it's for beer drinkers! I think it's like playground fighting with all the nobheads ringside shouting "Fight, Fight, Fight!"

I'm really tempted to say something very insulting to MMA fans, but I'm holding back...
It's something about what they REALLY like to drink...but, I'll be a good boy... ;D

Would a top boxer survive in MMA or vice versa. Thats what i'd like to know. i personally think a top MMArtist would whip a top boxer.

Would a top boxer survive in MMA or vice versa. Thats what i'd like to know. i personally think a top MMArtist would whip a top boxer. We've had this debate before and it usually ends with someone's feelings hurt... But, I don't think its a contest...give any world class boxer 4 oz. gloves and its instant decapitation for the MMA guy. People can talk about how the MMA fighters knows wrestling and submission, etc, but all fights start as stand-up fights and I've never seen an MMA fighter who had the boxing skill to even be a top 100 boxer. The MMA guys may occasionally get a token win here and there, but its a 95% win rate for the boxers who can move, defend and easily keep a novice boxer at a safe distance until the 4 oz glove puts an instant end to the contest. I would be willing to guess that we'd see a lot of wins in under a minute and even if the MMA fighter were able to get the boxer down, I'd still give the boxer a fair shot at hurting him... In any field of work, it's always better to be proficient in one discipline than marginally knowledgable in several...

Boxers must be super human. More so then a regular guy fighting in MMA. And by the way there is nothing wrong with beer. And like you've never heard "NOBHEADS" screaming "fight, fight, fight" ring side at a boxing bout! Get real.

Mercer won agianst Sylvia in 10 seconds or something stupid like that but Mercer's a tank.
Has MMA overtaken boxing in the States?

Not yet, but it sure seems well on it's way. Mercer is a tank, and has a age disadvantage against Sylvia. Even so, Sylvia is washed up, and fights with no plan, way to over confident, IMO.

Wasn't Mayweather talking about making the switch to MMA a while back. I think this is the only way we find out. Take the top guys at each sport and match them against each other. Mercer did beat Sylvia who is/was one of the top MMA guys, but also lost to Kimbo Slice who is a circus show. He is like Butterbean in boxing. I still remember UFC 1 when the boxer came in wearing a boxing glove on one hand.

Has MMA overtaken boxing in the States? Absolutely not...don't believe the hype. UFC 100 only outdrew the Tomasz Adamek-Bobby Gunn nothing card in Newark by a bit over 1,000 at the live gate. The numbers used to justify UFC's climb are very misleading...

Im starting to like Mayweather!! That's funny sh*t! MMA had been bad mouthing Boxing trying to take it's place. And I agree with Mayweather on this one!
He is on a role this past week. He called Pacquiao's bluff when he said if he wants it just say his name and they'll pay Marquez 1 million to step a side. Well team Pacquiao had no response and want to get destroyed by Cotto so they will never have to face Mayweather. Mayweather was right a fight between him and Pacman will not happen. For many reasons, but reason number 1 he chose to fight Cotto before Mayweather and Cotto will spoil there plans!!

The numbers used to justify UFC's climb are very misleading... If I remember right, 7-11 during the Vic Darchinyan vs. Joseph Agbeko all sorts of servers were crashing because of all the mma fans stealing the fight so.... just because they weren't at the fight or paying for the PPV doesn't mean they weren't watching. The fan base is huge, too many people will only buy their favorite boxer's PPV, but so many will buy or steal mma fights. As far as mayweather goes, some things will never change. He will always talk trash, and then back it up. That's why his fan base is huge.
