I went to Chichen Itza on my recent trip to Mexico. I had read a while back about it being on of the seven wonders of the world and then watched a show on it on the History channel. Before we went on our cruise I noticed it was one of the excursions you could book. So I talked my wife, brother, and his girlfriend all into going.
We arrived at the ruins and just like every other tourist spot we'd been to someone is trying to sale you something, no big deal. Then we go into the ruins with our travel guide, group of about 40, and throughout the entire sight are vendors trying to sale you stuff. Now I understand that these people are trying to make a living, so I shrugged it off. I was more disappointed in the government for the way they are running their site. This is a huge part of their history, but the entire time you are there you can't focus on the site because you are getting haggled by someone trying to sale you something. I just felt like they could of had a designated area for the vendors. I felt like this would be the equivalent of having a swap meet on top of the grand canyon. I've been to other Mayan sights before and they were not ran this way. Just had to strait my one complaint about my trip.

I hear you...I've been to the ruins of Teotihuacan and the same thing happened. There's nothing that will ruin an awe inspiring climb to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun more than some pesky vendor trying to sell you cheap jewelry and souvenirs..Same deal at other historical sites...
It's funny, but when Walmart wanted to put a store a short distance from the ruins at Teotihuacan, the Mexican government went ballistic and stopped the project because it would "degrade the historical importance of the site."
