As a Cubs fan I'm excited about Jake Peavy possibly coming over from the Padres.
I know ZD is a Padres fan...
any thoughts on Peavy from your perspective, zd? Obviously he's a good pitcher, but how good is he in the club house and in other areas?

Obviously he's a good pitcher, but how good is he in the club house and in other areas? I'll put it easy for you, Jake Peavy is the Carlos Zambrano of the Padres, very passionate athlete, that lets his emotions get the best of him at times, specially during the game, his never had any problems with any of his teammates though, in fact he is known for being a very good teammate and motivator, although this season was very frustrating for him, 9 of his 11 loses were in 0-1 or 1-2 games. us Padre fans(which is only 4 of us) are really disgusted with the way the team management is taking care of business by trying to get rid of their best pitcher after a disappointing season, but They announced today, that if a deal is not done by Thursday, than Peavy will be playing for the Padres next year, so there is still hope he'll stay.

After you say you're excited about getting the best player on our MLB team's roster, you have to at least throw in a "sorry, man" or advocate for a salary cap or something! ;D I wish all other MLB teams would leave Jack Wilson alone. Excellent clubhouse guy, very good glove, but you'll overpay. And just let the Pirates have one lifer, for crying out loud. Ah, he'll probably go. But if the Pirates sign Doug Mientkiewicz, the quintessential clubhouse guy, I'll be happy. That's all they have to do!

I'm just happy that the Cubs are finally beginning to throw their weight around when, previously, they managed their budgets like an Oklahoma City farm team. with Wrigley Field sell outs for almost every game, huge tv revenue and probably the most marketable franchise name (outside of the Yankees), it's time we start being the bullies of the school yard ;D And I will give thanks after the deal...Maybe this year we won't get swept in the playoffs...again.

Looks like the Yankees are getting Sabathia, the pursuit of A.J. Burnett is next. After a horrendous season in '08 (by Yankee standards), reality has set in that you can't rely on the bats forever.
I am curious as to why the Yanks didn't jump in the Peavy race, he's the best out there. My guess is that Peavy really doesn't want to play in N.Y., otherwise they'd have been all over him.

If I'm not mistaken, Peavy has a trade clause in his contract, so maybe you're right. Or Maybe the Yankees are only looking to add through free agency because they don't have the young talent to trade to a team like the Padres who are looking to rebuild with prospects.

I think you're right on both counts. I remember hearing that Peavy's no trade clause listed the Yankees as one team he WOULD want to go to, but they say it's just in there as more of chess piece to drive his value up with other teams more than anything else. More recently, it was said from the Yankees end that they weren't pursuing him because they didn't want to give up the players it would take to get him. My guess is that they were banking on Sabathia and/or Burnett to sign instead.

I know the Yankees locked up Sabathia , but did they sign Burnett also. And what's going on with Ben Sheets?

I know the Yankees locked up Sabathia , but did they sign Burnett also. And what's going on with Ben Sheets? I guess it depends on whether they can get Derek Lowe from the Dodgers. So the Mets now have Francisco Rodriguez AND J.J. Putz. I feel my yearly "screw MLB" rant coming on.

So, Peavy's not coming to Chicago. I'm not too upset, because the Cubs really don't need another starting pitcher and I guess the asking price was too much to consider the trade to SD.
What they really need is a good left handed bat in the outfield and maybe a solid left handed reliever.

I know the Yankees locked up Sabathia , but did they sign Burnett also. And what's going on with Ben Sheets? Right now, Burnett is deciding between NY and Atlanta. The Yanks have spoke to Sheets but I think he's more of a back up plan in case Burnett and Lowe don't work out. I'm just hoping Sabathia doesn't end up another NY flop and Burnett, should he get here, not end up on the DL two months into the season.
