So, guys, who do you see as the greater group of Welterweights?:
The Class of 1998:
Oscar De la Hoya, Felix Trinidad Ike Quartey Jose Luis Lopez Yory Boy Campas Oba Carr
or
The Class of 2008:
Antonio Margarito Miguel Cotto Paul Williams Shane Mosley Joshua Clottey Andre Berto

This is a tough one, I favor the class of 98, but statistically the class of 08 is better. DLH, Trinidad, Carr and Quartey were great fighters but Lopez and Campos is what separates them from the 2008 class.

Lopez was a vey bad man indeed. The guy probably had better skills than anyone at the time, but he was a total flake and didn't always come to his fights in shape.
He also suffered from not having a good promoter behind him. He drew with Quartey and beat Campas to a pulp, but the big fights with Oscar and Tito never materialized because he had nobody pushing for him.

At the moment - the 1998 bunch has it.
However, if the big fights are made at 147lb, i can see the class of 08 going ahead.

12 months on from Hatton-Mayweather and I'm not so sure that 147 looks all that great. Hatton's not big enough, Mayweather's called it a day, Margarito's strong but limited, Cotto's taken a beating, and Mosley's another year older.
I'd tip DLH and Trinidad to win their fights and for the other guys to eke out enough wins between them to give 98 the edge.

2008 is a better crop of fighters...Already,there's one epic fight that goes into the books(Cotto/Margarito)...The 98 club never had a fight like that...Clotty,Berto r anmals..i think this group is going to make a couple more really great fights.

I think the temptation is to go with the 98 crew but I think, overall, the 08 group is probably better.
But just think of the battles we could have if time machines existed- Tito vs. Cotto, Oscar vs. Margarito, Quartey vs. Clottey, etc...
